Food Journal and Check-ins

Find the foods that agree with you

Balnc’s food journal asks how you feel about 30 minutes after each meal you log. Once a food has three or more check-ins, it is sorted into feel good, watch list or neutral, and every food also gets an inflammation score from -5 to +5, so patterns show up without a spreadsheet.

How do meal check-ins work?

About 30 minutes after you log a meal, the Balnc mobile app sends a notification that opens a short chat. You record how you feel, pick any symptom categories and add a note if you want. You can turn check-ins off at any time. The mobile app is currently in testing; on the web you can see the food profile your check-ins build.

How does Balnc classify foods?

A food needs at least three check-ins before it is classified. You can always override the result by marking a food as known safe or a known trigger.

Food classifications from your check-ins
ClassificationWhen it applies
Feel good70% or more of check-ins after this food were positive
NeutralBetween 40% and 70% positive
Watch listFewer than 40% positive

What is the inflammation score?

Claude rates each food you log from -5 to +5 for its likely inflammatory effect, with anything between -0.5 and +0.5 treated as neutral. Your daily total appears on the Today page and counts as neutral between -1 and +1. It is an AI estimate based on the food, not a blood test.

Foods that land on your watch list are also saved as memories for the AI coach, so it can take them into account.

Common questions

Can Balnc diagnose a food intolerance?

No. The journal shows which foods tend to come before you feel good or unwell, based on your own check-ins. That can be useful to bring to a doctor or dietitian, but it is not a diagnosis or an allergy test.
